Gender ID

Gender ID was a Russian–German electro-rock and experimental music project led by artist Gene Sophia Bogolepov, which emerged from the post-Soviet underground scene in St. Petersburg in the early 2000s. Initially rooted in electro-punk and performance art, Bogolepov’s early work developed into Gender ID as a full band project, blending electroclash, synth-pop, indie rock, and theatrical stage performance.
The band was known for emotionally intense live shows and concept-driven songwriting that often explored themes of identity, alienation, sexuality, and sociopolitical tension in post-Soviet and European contexts. Gender ID became part of a wider Eastern European alternative circuit and later expanded activity into Germany and other parts of Europe. During its active years, the band performed alongside acts such as Ladytron, Placebo, Editors, Sparks, She Wants Revenge, and Apparat Band, gaining recognition within underground electronic and indie music scenes.
Throughout its existence, Gender ID released 2 albums, multiple EPs, and singles, contributing to its cult status in niche electro-rock communities. The project is often viewed as an important transitional stage in Bogolepov’s artistic development before her later solo identities, including work under aliases such as 1314 and “bogolepov,” which moved further into queer electronic pop, ambient, and experimental sound after her relocation to Berlin.
The band’s final live performance took place in St. Petersburg in 2016, marking the end of its active period and effectively closing its performance history as a collective project. After that, Gender ID remained inactive as Bogolepov shifted focus toward solo artistic directions and multidisciplinary work.
A key part of the band’s history was its collaboration with co-founder Danil Kostrov, a close friend of Bogolepov. Kostrov passed away from cancer in London in 2021 at the age of 40, a loss that marked a significant moment for those connected to the project and its broader creative circle.
Gender ID is now regarded as a concluded project and an important formative chapter in Gene Bogolepov’s artistic trajectory, bridging his underground electro-punk origins with his later international and genre-fluid work.
