‘Art Brut’ came out on the very last day of 2021 – a year I would call My Year of Magickal Thinking. It was mentally so unbearable for me that I had to seek help in spiritual practices, which became both exit strategies and tools for healing.
That year, I experienced an intense creative drive. It resulted not only in this album, but also in a number of songs that will likely appear on future releases. Under the positive influence of Scout Hansen, with whom I was working on our Dukes of Betelgeuse project at the time, I also began drawing simple pictures – just another form of therapy alongside music.
That was the year when my understanding of music as therapy merged with a deep spiritual search, and this album became a natural snapshot of that period. At its core, it’s about grief and processing loss, the hard work of self-love and acceptance, and the biggest question of all – who’s crazy here? It explores confusion, and the possibility of inner peace in spite of it.
This 2026 Mycelium edition of Art Brut includes a different version of “Sunday on the Moon.” This time, it features a poem by Scout Hansen, recited by her over the track, which was originally conceived as a soundtrack for her short film of the same title.
